When I make a painting, reaching sublime neutrality is the connection to a creative force that is necessary to make something. Emotion is the fuel that delivers and directs an idea through the mind, through heart, through the hands, and onto the canvas. Transcendence without the presence of emotion, while fertile, remains utterly neutral and unchanging, non-physical. Emotion crystallizes ideas from nothing into something we can experience with our senses. This is true for my abstract as well as narrative works.
